Pangbourne Primary Going For Gold

May 16th, 2016 – Pangbourne Primary School is celebrating after becoming the proud winner of a prestigious awards scheme, the Sainsbury’s Gold School Games Award.

The Sainsbury's School Games is a Government led scheme which rewards schools for their commitment to the development of PE, sport and competition across their school. Thousands of schools apply each year and are assessed against their resilience, perseverance and team effort in a wide range of sporting events.

To achieve gold accreditation, schools must demonstrate performance and participation in a range of extra-curricular sporting activities within school and across the wider community. Recent examples at Pangbourne Primary include cross-country, Kwik cricket, orienteering and tennis.

The school marked the occasion with a special ‘Sports Assembly’, which was also attended by Rachael Wardell, Corporate Director for Communities at West Berkshire Council. The assembly hall was filled with children proudly holding medals, certificates, badges and sports awards.

On being presented the award, head teacher Melissa Fry acknowledged the efforts of the school’s Sports Ambassadors. These pupils promote sport across the school and take part in a range of activities that include playground games, PE kit coordination and even blog writing.

Mrs Fry also thanked Ms Kilsby, the school’s sports coordinator, who has been instrumental in the school’s sporting achievements.

Rachael Wardell said: “It’s lovely to recognise the efforts of children when enjoying and excelling at sport. In addition to learning, physical education is a vital and fun part of school life.”

Melissa Fry said: “I couldn’t be prouder to see our school achieve this award. It’s great recognition for our commitment to school sport and physical education. The award not only recognises performance, but also emphasises effort and participation – something we are proud to have a high level of. A huge thank you to all the pupils and especially to Ms Kilsby.”
